Review Of The ICOtec Hellion

Speaker Unit Design

The first thing you will notice about the Hellion is that it is black and not the usual green color of other ICOtec callers.

The basic product features of the Hellion are:

  • size is approximately 10 x 8 x 6 inches
  • weighs only 3 pounds
  • covert looking black outer case for stealth predator calling
  • loud single speaker
  • threaded tripod mount making it easy to raise off the ground.
  • durable swivel antenna

With a weight of only 3 pounds it’s light weight in comparison to some of the other larger programmable callers available. With its nice compact design, this makes it easy to just throw in your hunting pack if you want to get out for a day and try your luck taking down a predator or two.

Remote Technology

The remote control is the brain of a programmable electronic caller, and it’s important that it has some key features built in, while looking good and easy to handle.

The Hellion remote control has an easy to read, backlit digital screen with large font, as well as backlit buttons. With the screen light, you can use it in a range of environments, as well as any time of day or night.

300 Yard Range Remote

One of the primary selling points of ICOtec predator callers is the 300 yard remote range that they promote, and the Hellion also boasts this as its standard feature set. The remote also doesn’t require line of sight to activate the main speaker unit.

Although that long distance range may not usually be required, it’s definitely a nice to have option as it gives you heaps of flexibility when setting up your perfect stand.

The remote also includes the usual things like on/off button, pause button, and stand timer. You can also save up to 8 calls in 2 favorites screens.

Sounds

To get you started, the Hellion already comes with 200 quality audio calls loaded, including a range of predator sounds to choose from. However, if you want to add your own unique calls, you will be pleased to know that the Hellion is a programmable electronic call.

With the standard size SD media card, you will be able to load either .mp3 or .wav (16 bit or less) file formats directly onto it and then play your own customs sounds via the remote control. To enable all this, the synchronization cables and computer USB connection cables are of course included.

If you are looking for extra calls to add, pick your favorite audio call library to download some different predator calls. If you are not sure where to find them, you can always check out the free ICOtec sound library or even MFK Game Calls for some specialty sounds.

Batteries

To operate the Hellion, the main unit requires 4AA (1.5 volt batteries), while the remote control will require a 9 volt battery. Just be aware these are not included and you will need to buy these to get started!

Users have also reported that the caller has a really good battery life and low power consumption for what it is. If you are going to be using your electronic call regularly, it’d also be a good idea to invest in some rechargeable batteries.

Decoy

An electronic decoy can add another exciting level to hunting strategies, and the Hellion has the ability to plug one in and activate it using the remote control. If the decoy has adjustable speed, you can also control that.

If you are considering getting a decoy to go with your caller, the ICOtec AD450 black decoy is recommended for the Hellion.

The AD450 decoy has been designed with a speed dial, whisper quiet motor, intermittent motion, 2 quick-change toppers, plus an LED light which is handy for night hunts. The other handy function is that it has its own power source so it won’t drain the main caller batteries.

Warranty

As with all ICOtec callers, the Hellion is covered by their standard one year manufacturer’s warranty which includes things like material defects and workmanship. It doesn’t cover the usual things like damage from misuse, accidents or improper handling.

FAQs

Will it play 2 sounds simultaneously?

No, the Hellion is only able to play one sound at a time.

WIth the increase in caller technology, some electronic callers enable the ability to play 2 different sounds at the same time. If this is something you really want, but don’t have the budget for a more expensive programmable caller, one nifty way to get around this is to create custom mp3 sound files, where you combine two or more of your favorite sounds to create your own custom audio file for some really unique calls.

What’s the difference between the GC500 and Hellion Electronic Caller?

The most obvious difference between the two callers is the color, which depending on your hunting needs and the environments that you will be using it in, the color might be the biggest influence on your choice.

However, some of the other key differences between the GEN2 GC500 and the Hellion is that the Hellion has a slightly different range of sound files, with more of a focus on predator specific sounds. If you don’t care about having the widest range of species sounds, then the Hellion would be the better option.

Also, when it comes to the remote, the GC500 has a coach-in button which the Hellion does not.

Verdict On The ICOtec Hellion

Although it has lots of features and it’s single speaker has fantastic quality audio, the Hellion predator coyote caller still remains easy to operate, which is essential when you are out on a cold winters stand waiting in your stand for a predator to come along.

Although it would not be considered a budget electronic game call, it still remains a fantastic quality but an affordable priced option for those who are getting started using a programmable call setup.
